How to Productively Spend Your Time

Posted in i like this with tags , , , , , , , , , on October 8, 2009 by melsanie

Picture 1Someone on Facebook posted a link to this site called Incredibox and, being the inquisitive person that I am, I clicked through to check it out.  A half hour later, I came to the conclusion that this is in the top 10 of my favorite music websites.  At first I had no idea what it was and I had to play around with it by dragging the little arrows and circle-ish items from the bottom up to the cartoon guys but then I realized that I was making my own beatbox.  I could add elements of instruments, percussion, chorus, effects and more.  You can mix it up move them around and create totally original sounds.  Mer and I spent a good part of our days playing with this.  Yay, bi-coastal, global fun!

Post Script. Def try the shuffle mode.

In Case You Were Wondering…

This is what I’m listening to today.

To be honest, I just wanted to test out GrooveShark and see what it’s all about.

Verdict: Big Fan.  You should be too.

Sometimes, Your Friends Are Cooler than You Are

So you have to lift from their blog.  Such is the case with Katie.  She’s cooler than I am, fact.  A fact most recently evidenced by her recent post of We Have Band’s new music video for “You Came Out” on her blog.

Fun fact via Much Cooler Than I Am, Katie:

Apparently [the video] was shot over 2 days and stop frame animated from 4,816 still images without a single moment of video footage.

Pretty cool, eh?

One Part of the 90s I Want to Relive

Posted in hippies, music, opinions, the 90's with tags , , , , on June 16, 2009 by melsanie

Dave Matthews Band. Man, did I love them.  My camp counselor introduced me to them in fifth grade and my life was never the same (My life might have also changed due to the fact that my bunk did a song and dance number to “Total Eclipse of the Heart” in front of the whole camp, but that’s another story.)  I loved all his albums from then on–I actually didn’t like Crash at first, but eventually grew to like it.  However, after the Lillywhite Sessions album, by fandom decreased.  I couldn’t even get into Everyday.  Sure, they had a few good songs here and there, but nothing like the 90’s era hits.  I don’t want to go to a concert now because I don’t want to hear the new stuff, just the oldies but goodies.  Those concerts were epic.  The tailgating, the cloud of smoke above Alpine Valley, insane amounts of hemp and tie-dye.  Man, those were great.  Concerts now though are filled with the grown up versions of hippies and are far less fun.  If I could time travel back to the 90’s, I would do three things:  rock out on my Skip-It, tell myself to never wear the hat that looks like a condom and go to a Dave concert.

Favorite songs:

  • #41
  • Two Step
  • Crash Into Me (Live from Folsom Field version)
  • Lover Lay Down
  • The Stone
  • Grace is Gone
  • Warehouse
  • Crush
  • Say Goodbye
  • Big Eyed Fish
  • Grey Street
  • Ants Marching (only the live versions

Know what’s weird? I’ve been a college graduate for officially one year now.  Meaning, I can no longer say “I just graduated from college” without it being a lie.  Rough, right? Know what’s not a lie? Ezra Furman and the Harpoons.  They’ve done way more this past year, straight out of college, than I have (new album, SXSW, Lollapalooza etc…) so, on this one-year anniversary of our graduation from Larry Bacow University, I give you, my Stratton Hall neighbors (and Adam), Ezra Furman and the Harpoons.  Enjoy.

I like to share music/impose my musical preferences on everyone I know.  I made mixtapes growing up and gave them as gifts to all my friends.  Some things never change.  If you’re looking for some good music, give these a go.  These are currently on heavy rotation on my itunes.  Enjoy!

    1. Under the Black Light – Rilo Kiley
    2. Gold Lion – Yeah Yeah Yeahs
    3. C+F – Sam Prekop
    4. Tears Dry On Their Own – Amy Winehouse
