Dithy Does De Young

Tuesday was my day off.  It just so happened to be the first Tuesday of the month, which meant Free Museum Day!  This month, I picked The De Young.  I was kind of disappointed with The De Young to be honest.  It’s not that big, and, at the risk of sounding like an “Elitist East Coast” jackass, I think the collection was a bit paltry.  That being said, I did really enjoy the use of interior space.  Oftentimes, when we go to a museum, we forget that the arrangement of the objects on display is an art in and of itself.  The De Young doesn’t let you forget that, as each gallery opens itself up to be admired not only for the paintings/tapestries/masks etc… on display, but the way in which the objects are being displayed.  As I said about the MOMA, kinda meta, but definitely awesome.

Dithy Does MOMA

Every first Tuesday of the month, San Francisoc’s Museum of Modern Art is free to the general public.  Having never been to the SF MOMA, I figured today might as well be the day.  So, I got up early, braved the crazy throngs of tourists, set my ipod on my “chill mix” and wandered around.  The San Francisco MOMA is pretty small — I was able to meander around the entire place (minus the Georgia O’Keef and Richard Avedon exhibits) in under two hours, but it was a sweet place.  It really made me miss East Coast weekends spent wandering around the Philadelphia Art Museum and Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts for hours.   Next time: Richard Avedon exhibit. I’m psyched for that.

After the actual art collection being displayed, people watching is my favorite thing to do while at a museum.  I don’t really understand when people take pictures of paintings in museums.  But, it fascinates me that they do.  I, on the other hand, like taking pictures of people at art museums.  I know.  It’s pretty meta.
