What happens when you take the most annoying song ever — Crazy by Knarles Barkley — and have one of the best grunge bands from the 80s/90s — Violent Femmes — to ever record a song (maybe) about masturbation or kicking heroin (nobody really knows…) — Blister in the Sun? Give up?

Bad Romance is maybe the most important pop song in music right now.” — Matt

Cover vs. Original

Fact: Covers of songs usually suck.  Oftentimes, its not necessarily the fault of the artist doing the song cover, it’s just that the original was kind of a classic, and you just can’t improve upon a classic.  You can’t.

Little Discussed Fact: Sometimes covers are better than the original song.  Maybe it’s because the original kind of sucked, or maybe it’s because the artist doing the cover has completely re-arranged the structure of the song making it almost like a new song entirely — but for whatever reason, you hear the cover, and you think, “this is a really tight cover!”

This post is about those songs…

Is Hey Jude the greatest pop song of all time?

Or, How I Learned to Quit Worrying, and Love the Britney

Now that I’m not working for the Oldies (But Goodies) anymore, I have ample time to sit around searching the world (well, according to the wide web, that is) for new music.  Sometimes, I even rake through my itunes for old music that I’ve forgotten about, but still love — the Oldy But Goodies of my personal music collection, if you will.  Sometimes — okay, often — this leads me to Britney Spears.  Pre-meltdown, she was awesome.  Don’t try to argue with me, about this, you will lose.

Anyway, the more I listened to Britney, the more I realized, she’s got the entire 5-step Grieving Process in her song catalog.  Don’t believe me?  Watch this:

Sometimes, when I’m working with the OBG’s, listening to the soft rock radio station, I get a glimpse into what I’d be like had I come of age in the 70s/80s.

Song: “One More Try” by George Michael.

What I’ve learned about 1980’s Meredith: I’d totally do George Michael.

Adventures in Theme Songs

The Wonder Years.  Remember when there was that rumor going around middle school that Marilyn Manson played Paul, Kevin’s best friend? That was a weird rumor.  This, is a rad theme song though.

Music You Should Dig

Phoenix.  They’re awesome. They’re French (don’t worry, they sing in English…) if you like Air, MGMT, and, I don’t know, good music? You’ll dig them. I don’t think I really need to say anything more than that.

Phoenix’ latest album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix came out in May and has been on pretty heavy rotation on my itunes ever since — it should be on yours too.

Adventures in Great Theme Songs

Today’s Adventures in Great Theme Songs brought to you by everyone’s favorite redheaded, same name brothers, Big Pete and Little Pete — aka The Adventures of Pete and Pete.  I’ll admit, this show was weird, sometimes gross, and took me a really long time to like.  On the plus side, it had a really rockin’ theme song that still holds up as a legit song on its own today.
