Turn and Face the Strange

A friend that I made here in San Francisco, just moved to New York last week.  Understandably, she was pretty nervous/excited/terrified about moving across the country.  This led me to reflect on my own trans-continental move, and the changes my life has taken on in the past ten months.  Don’t worry, I won’t bore you with those reflections.  I will though, share with you an excerpt of  a something my friend posted on facebook: her mom’s blog post about her big move/the inevitable changes we encounter in life, because, well, I think it’s pretty awesome, and I wish my mom gave advice like this:

Moving – to a new city, a new apartment, a new life – represents, to me, the unstoppable changes that occur in this human existence. We change jobs, cars, doctors, favorite foods, significant others, perfumes, beliefs, hair color, friends. We have a favorite author and devour all of her books, then open to someone else’s words and purview of life; we follow a beloved teacher, leader, or band, and then leave them to adore someone new. Like seasons, we pass from one variation of ourselves to another, never leaving the core of who we are, but shedding, growing, and creating our form over and over again.

Change demands courage, demands faith, and a sense that all will be right, even if everything is different…Many people are petrified to enter the unknown, even though it is inevitable to stand at the edge of a place we have never been.

She’s right.  Changes are inevitable, daunting, and sometimes sad.  But change also opens up the pathway to better, more fulfilling opportunities as well. Sometimes though, I wish it didn’t take so long to discover those pathways.

Or, How I Learned to Quit Worrying, and Love the Britney

Now that I’m not working for the Oldies (But Goodies) anymore, I have ample time to sit around searching the world (well, according to the wide web, that is) for new music.  Sometimes, I even rake through my itunes for old music that I’ve forgotten about, but still love — the Oldy But Goodies of my personal music collection, if you will.  Sometimes — okay, often — this leads me to Britney Spears.  Pre-meltdown, she was awesome.  Don’t try to argue with me, about this, you will lose.

Anyway, the more I listened to Britney, the more I realized, she’s got the entire 5-step Grieving Process in her song catalog.  Don’t believe me?  Watch this:

Live: From the Midwest, It’s Conservatism and Apple Pie

Usually I only go back to Wisconsin for the big holidays, Fourth of July and Thanksgiving, but this weekend I returned to the land of cheese because my friends Emily and Luke got married after about 8 years of dating. I was there when they started dating and at almost every step along the way, so it was really exciting to see them finally get hitched.  I’ve never been home in the fall so I also got my fill of apples, comfort food and a hefty amount of conservative talk–because nothing says Autumn like denouncing gay marriage and mashed potatoes. Hand in hand, really. Continue reading

Meredith and I are working all weekend this weekend.  She’s working the worst shifts at the restaurant and I’m working this weekend long event for work.  We’ll both be standing the whole time, running right round baby right round like a record baby right round, round round and both be super stoked about life.  I love working through the weekend.  Dancing through life, just like these obgs!

Sometimes This Happens

There I was, talking to Nikki on the phone, chillin’ on the couch, staring out the window at the night-time version of our awesome view when, a light flicked on in the apartment behind us, revealing a cluttered livingroom and a…topless old chubby woman?  She waddled a little closer to the window, revealing herself to be a completely naked old chubby woman.  I wanted to look away, but I could not stop looking.

“Nikki, I’m going to have to interrupt you here, because there is a naked woman walking around in her apartment.”

“Wait, what?”

“I thought she was just a topless woman, but then, oops! Turns out she’s not wearing any pants either!”

“Okay….”

“I can’t stop watching.”

Ugly Naked Gal commenced straightening up her livingroom in all her ugly naked glory.  She picked up a package, waddled into the next room, revealing an ugly pale tan line on her ugly naked bum.  This was enthralling.  People like this DO exist.

When I got off the phone with Nikki, I rushed down the hallway to tell Dana, my roomate.

“Dana! You’ll never guess what just happened –”

“Naked neighbor?” Dana casually answered as if I had just asked her the time.

“Yeah, how’d you know?”

“Taylor and I have seen her before.  Welcome to the party. It’s an ugly one.”

I laughed for a second, but then grew pensive.  Because, I mean, who am I kidding here? This is totally me in thirty years.

Fashion Week Recap

One of my favorite looks by Jason Wu

  1. High heels are a must at all times. ALL.TIMES.
  2. The weirder you look, the more your picture will be taken.
  3. Male models, though cute, are not the best runway walkers.
  4. Anna Wintour is more intimidating in person, which is awesome.
  5. The love of fashion is contagious but fashion sense is not.
  6. The tents are really hot and fans or a cooling system are a must because sweat is the worst accessory. Ha.
  7. I felt way too entitled this week.
  8. In order to feel entitled I need to attend a fashion show party and sit closer to the runway.
  9. Favorite collections: Oscar de la Renta, Milly by Michelle, Jason Wu, Max Azria, Christian Siriano, Sophie Theallet
  10. I went to the tents more than once and neither developed an eating nor a body image issue.  I see that as a huge win.

IMG00243-20090911-1514So I’ve lived in New York for about three years now and all this time I have never taken part in any fashion activities so this year I figured I should at least see what all the hubbub is about.  I should mention that it helps that I also have a contact at IMG who got me into fashion shows.  Lesson here kids: it’s never what you know, it’s who you know. Don’t stay in school, just learn how to mingle and fake a degree from an Ivy League or at least FIT.
